Configuring SLIP
|
| |
-
The installation program will ask if you would like an express install
(use default values for IO Port, IRQ and modem initialization string.)
You should answer yes, unless the modem is connected to a com port
with a non-standard configuration.
-
You'll then be shown the serial port chip versions that were found on your
machine. If the chip version is something other than NS16550A, you
may experience problems with SLIP, especially at higher speeds. If you
do, try reconfiguring SLIP to use a lower speed.
-
When prompted for the baud rate, press Enter to accept the supplied
default or enter a different baud rate if necessary. The baud rates shown
include compression and are related to the speed of the modem that you
are using and the dial up lines that you use. Typical baud rates for a
9600 modem is 38,400 and for a 14,000 modem is 57,600, etc.
-
When prompted for the com port your modem is connected to, enter either
a 1, 2, 3, or 4.
-
You will then be asked to enter the dialup number. The phone number must
be entered as you would dial it, i.e., 413-3200 (Hunt Group 1, for 14.4
Kpbs modems), 413-9111 (Hunt Group 2, for 28.8 Kbps modems), 413-9090 (Hunt
Group 3, 33.6 Kbps modems) or 413-3332 (Dialin-Express). Add a 1 and an
area code if you are not in the 312 area code. You may also want to prefix
the telephone number by *70 to prevent call waiting from interrupting
the call.
-
Press Enter to accept the supplied default or enter a different
dialup number if necessary.
-
When prompted, enter your full name, and then when prompted, enter
your netid in the form yournetid@uic.edu
-
You will need to press Enter after SLIP makes a backup of some windows
file.
-
If prompted for the drive and directory where you installed Windows, press
Enter to accept the supplied default or enter a different drive
and directory if necessary. You will need to press Enter after SLIP
makes a backup of some windows file.
-
When prompted whether to modify autoexec.bat, enter y for
yes.
-
When prompted that SLIP configuration is complete: Press Enter to
exit then restart you computer.
