Configuring PPP (Point-to-Point Protocol) for Modem/Telephone Use (for Windows 95).

Starting the PPP Setup:

To begin, single click on the Start button in the lower left corner.

  • Go to Settings.
  • Single click on Control Panel.
  • Double click on Network.

In the list of Installed Network Components, make sure both "Dial-up Adapter" and "TCP/IP" are listed, but make sure they are listed ONLY ONCE. If there is more than one listing for either of these, be sure to remove one of them by clicking on the item and then clicking on the Remove button.

Setting Up the Dial-up Adapter (if not listed)

If the Dial-up Adapter is not listed:

  • Click on the Add... button.
  • Select Adapter, then click on the Add... button.
  • Select Microsoft from the list of Manufacturers.
  • Select Dial-up Adapter and then click the OK button.

Setting Up TCP/IP Protocol (if not listed)

If TCP/IP is not listed:

  • Click on the Add... button.
  • Select Protocol and then click on the Add... button.
  • Select Microsoft from the list of Manufacturers.
  • Select TCP/IP and then click the OK button.

Configuring TCP/IP for UIC

  • Select TCP/IP from the list of installed network components, and click on the Properties button.
  • Under the "IP Address" tab (near the top), select Obtain an address automatically.
  • Under the "DNS Configuration" tab, select Enable DNS.
  • In the "Host Name box", enter any name for your computer (e.g., my_machine). For Domain, enter UIC.EDU
  • In the "DNS server search order box", type: 128.248.171.50
  • Click on Add.
  • Repeat the last two steps replacing the IP address with 128.248.7.50, and then 128.248.2.50. Then click OK.
  • You should not have to change anything else, but you may want to check the rest of the settings to make sure they are properly set. Under the "WINS Configuration" tab, Disable WINS Resolution should be checked. Under the "Advanced" tab, you should only have "None" listed. Under the "Gateway" tab, you should have no numbers listed. Under "Bindings" you should have nothing listed.
  • Click OK on the Network Window to finish Adapter Protocol setup.
  • Windows may ask for Windows 95 disks or a CD-ROM.
  • It should also ask to restart Windows 95. This is necessary for the changes to take effect.

Setting Your UIC Dial-In Connection

  • When you are back in Windows 95 after restarting, click on Start, then on Programs, then on Accessories, and then on Dial-up Networking.
  • Note: If Dial-up Networking is NOT in the Accessories list, you will have to install it before proceeding. To do so, follow these 7 steps. Otherwise, skip them.

    1. Click on the Start button, then on Settings, and then on Control Panel.
    2. Click on Add/Remove Programs, then click on the Windows Setup tab (the middle of the three tabs towards the top of the screen).
    3. Make sure that the box in front of Communications is checked. If it is not, click on the box to make the check mark appear.
    4. Then click on OK and the communications software will be installed. You will have to insert your Windows 95 CD or floppy disks.
    5. If the box WAS already checked, click on the Details button. Make sure there is a check in front of Dial-up Networking. Then choose OK on the Communications window, and then OK on the Add/Remove Programs window.
    6. If both of those were checked, but Dial-up Networking still does not appear under Accessories, you should call Microsoft Support for assistance.
    7. Now click on Start, then on Programs, then on Accessories, and then on Dial-up Networking.

  • Double click on Make New Connection. (Note: If your modem is not listed in the Make New Connection window, go to the Control Panel (as described above) and click on Add New Hardware. Then follow the prompts to add your modem.
  • Type UIC-1 (or any descriptive label) in the Computer Name field (the default is "My Connection") and then click Next.
  • In the Phone Number field, type 312 in for the area code. If your modem speed is 14,400 or slower, type 413-3200 in the phone number field. If your modem is 28.8 or faster, type 413-9111 or 413-9090 (you could make a separate icon for each, assigning a descriptive label per the previous step) and then click on Next.
  • Click on Finish to finish setting up the Connection.
  • An icon will appear in the Dial-up Networking folder called UIC-1.
  • Click UIC-1 with the right mouse button (instead of the left) and then click Properties, then on the Configure button (or tab) and then on the Options tab near the top.
  • Put a check in the box next to "Bring up terminal window after dialing" and make sure that "Bring up terminal window before dialing" is NOT checked. Then click on OK.
  • Click on Server type. For "Type of Dial-up Server" make sure "PPP:Windows 95, Windows NT 3.5, Internet" is selected. "Enable software compression" and "TCP/IP" should be checked, but not "Require encrypted password".
In the section called "Allowed Network Protocols", at least "TCP/IP" should be checked.
  • On the "Server Types" tab, click on "TCP/IP Settings." Choose "Server assigned IP address" and "Server assigned name server" (it takes it's values from the network settings you already configured).
Also be sure to check both of the bottom boxes called "Use IP header compression" and "Use default gateway on remote network".
  • Click the OK button, then click the OK button one more time on the UIC-1 window.
  • In addition, you may also want to setup another connection icon to automatically dial the second number (in case the first is busy) or to use the Dialin-Express line (which allows you only 10 minutes, but is seldom busy). Simply follow the above procedure again (starting with Setting your UIC Dial-in Connection). Name the connection something besides UIC-1 (UIC-Express, for example), and use either of the other phone numbers listed above, or the express number 413-3332. Connecting to UIC:

Now you are ready to dial and connect to UIC.

  • Double click on the UIC-1 icon in the "Dial-up Networking" folder to dial and connect.
  • It will bring up a "Connect to UIC-1" window with the phone number you previously chose in the phone number field. You do not need to fill out the User name and Password fields here - you will be prompted for them directly from the UIC server after you connect.
  • If you have Call Waiting and you would like to disable it so as not to be interrupted while you're connected, Click on Dial Properties, then check the box next to "This location has call waiting. . ." Then, from the pull down menu to the right of that sentence, choose *70. Then click the OK button.
  • Click on Connect to dial the number and connect. You should hear your modem dialing and connecting.
  • Once connected you will see the UIC FLAMES screen scroll by. At the bottom of the screen it will prompt you for your Username.
  • Type your netid, then press enter. If you don't know what your netid is, call the CSO (see end of this document).
  • Type the password associated with your netid and press enter. If you don't know your password, you will have to come in person to have it changed. (See end of this document for additional help.)
  • If your netid and password are valid, you will see a DIALIN-#> Prompt. Type PPP at that Prompt and press enter. Then click on Continue.
  • Windows 95 will then verify the connection and show the status "Logging onto Network". When it is done, the "Disconnect" button will also appear. You may then minimize the window if you wish, or it will appear in the lower right hand corner of your task bar if you have a later version of Windows 95.
  • Now you can run any network (TCP/IP) applications like Netscape, Eudora, TN3270, etc. If you have already installed the NSKit, you will find these applications by clicking on the Start button, then Programs, then Network Services Kit.
  • When you are finished, be sure to disconnect. Select the Connected to UIC-1 button from the task bar and then click on Disconnect. OR, if you have a later version of Windows 95, you may not have this button. Instead, on the far right side of your task bar you will see a group of little icons, one of which is two computers attached to each other. Just click on it with the right mouse button, and click on "Disconnect" from the menu that appears.
