Configuring TCP/IP for ADN-ii in Windows NT 4.0

To be able to complete this configuration, you must know your Computer's "IP address" and "host name". If you do not know these, see "Need Additional Help" below.

Starting TCP/IP Setup

To begin, single click on the Start Button in the lower left corner.

  • Click on Settings, then on Control Panel, then double-click on Network.
  • You should see a screen with 4 tabs on top. You only need to use the "Adapter" and "Protocol" tabs.
  • Under their respective tabs, make sure both a "Network Adapter" and "TCP/IP" are listed ONLY ONCE. If either of them are listed more than once, highlight one of them and then click on Remove.
  • If you're not sure what to look for, Network Adapters have small green 'cards' next to them in the list of network components. You can see a list of the four symbols used here by clicking the Add... button. The Network adapter listed should match the type of ethernet card you have in your computer.

Adding a Network Card or Adapter (if not listed)

If there is no Network Adapter or TCPIP listed, follow the steps below accordingly.

  • Choose the "Network" tab.
  • Single click on Add
  • Your computer might start building a database of known adapters which could take a couple of sconds. Please be patient.
  • You should see a screen with most of the known adapters of network cards used today. choose the one that is specific to your network card. If you have a disk already with the necessary drivers on there for your particular card, single click on Have Disk .
  • Windows NT 4.0 may ask for its diskettes or CD. And it may ask to restart your computer. You must let it restart your computer for changes to take effect.

Adding the TCP/IP Protocol if not listed

  • Choose the "Protocols" tab.
  • Click on Add.... and then on Protocol, and then on Add.
  • Select Microsoft from the list of Manufacturers.
  • Select TCP/IP, and click OK.
  • Windows NT 4.0 may ask for its diskettes or CD. And it may ask to restart your computer. You must let it restart your computer for changes to take effect.

Configuring TCP/IP Protocol

  • Select TCP/IP under the "Protocols" tab and click on Properties.
  • Under the "IP Address" tab, select Specify an IP address.
  • In the "IP Address field", enter the IP number (in the form ###.###.###.###). (E.g., 131.193.154.102)
  • In the "Subnet Mask" field, enter 255.255.255.0
  • Under the "Gateway" tab, enter the first three sets of numbers of your IP address and then a "1" as the fourth set. For example, if your IP address is 128.248.100.220, then the Gateway will be 128.248.100.1) Then click on Add
  • Under the "DNS Configuration" tab, select "Enable DNS" and then type your computer's host name in the "Host" field and your computer's domain name in the "Domain" field. For example, if V012.math.uic.edu were the entire host name of your computer, V012 would be entered into the "Host" field, and math.uic.edu would be entered in the "Domain" field).
  • In the DNS server search order, type: 128.248.171.50 and click on Add.
  • Repeat the previous step for UIC's two other name servers: 128.248.7.50 and 128.248.2.50.
