Configuring TCP/IP for ADN-ii in Windows NT 4.0

To be able to complete this configuration, you must know your
Computer's "IP address" and "host name". If you do not know these,
see "Need Additional Help" below.

Starting TCP/IP Setup
|
| |
To begin, single click on the Start Button in the lower
left corner.
- Click on Settings, then on Control Panel, then
double-click on Network.
- You should see a screen with 4 tabs on top. You only need to
use the "Adapter" and "Protocol" tabs.
- Under their respective tabs, make sure both a "Network
Adapter" and "TCP/IP" are listed ONLY ONCE. If either of them are
listed more than once, highlight one of them and then click on
Remove.
- If you're not sure what to look for, Network Adapters have
small green 'cards' next to them in the list of network
components. You can see a list of the four symbols used here by
clicking the Add... button. The Network adapter listed
should match the type of ethernet card you have in your computer.

Adding a Network Card or Adapter (if not listed)
|

If there is no Network Adapter or TCPIP listed, follow the steps
below accordingly.
- Choose the "Network" tab.
- Single click on Add
- Your computer might start building a database of known
adapters which could take a couple of sconds. Please be patient.
- You should see a screen with most of the known adapters of
network cards used today. choose the one that is specific to your
network card. If you have a disk already with the necessary
drivers on there for your particular card, single click on Have
Disk .
- Windows NT 4.0 may ask for its diskettes or CD. And it may ask
to restart your computer. You must let it restart your computer
for changes to take effect.

Adding the TCP/IP Protocol if not
listed
|

- Choose the "Protocols" tab.
- Click on Add.... and then on Protocol, and then
on Add.
- Select Microsoft from the list of Manufacturers.
- Select TCP/IP, and click OK.
- Windows NT 4.0 may ask for its diskettes or CD. And it may ask
to restart your computer. You must let it restart your computer
for changes to take effect.

Configuring TCP/IP Protocol
|

- Select TCP/IP under the "Protocols" tab and click on
Properties.
- Under the "IP Address" tab, select Specify an IP
address.
- In the "IP Address field", enter the IP number (in the form
###.###.###.###). (E.g., 131.193.154.102)
- In the "Subnet Mask" field, enter 255.255.255.0
- Under the "Gateway" tab, enter the first three sets of numbers
of your IP address and then a "1" as the fourth set. For example,
if your IP address is 128.248.100.220, then the Gateway will be
128.248.100.1) Then click on Add
- Under the "DNS Configuration" tab, select "Enable DNS" and
then type your computer's host name in the "Host" field and your
computer's domain name in the "Domain" field. For example, if
V012.math.uic.edu were the entire host name of your computer,
V012 would be entered into the "Host" field, and
math.uic.edu would be entered in the "Domain" field).
- In the DNS server search order, type: 128.248.171.50
and click on Add.
- Repeat the previous step for UIC's two other name servers:
128.248.7.50 and 128.248.2.50.
- Now click OK . Click OK one more time on the
Network Window to finish Network setup.
- Windows may ask for Windows NT disks or CD-ROM. And it may ask
to restart Windows NT.
- Now you can run Winsock (TCP/IP) applications like Netscape,
Eudora, TN3270, etc. To start any of them, click on Start, then
Programs, then ADN Internet tools, and then select the
program you want to run.
