Starting TCP/IP Setup
|
| |
To begin, single click on the Start Button in the lower left
corner.
- Click on Settings, then on Control Panel, then double-click
on Network.
- In the list of Installed Network Components, make sure both a "Network
Adapter" and "TCP/IP" are listed ONLY ONCE. If either of
them are listed more than once, highlight one of them and then click on
Remove.
- If you're not sure what to look for, Network Adapters have small green
'cards' next to them in the list of network components. You can see a list
of the four symbols used here by clicking the Add... button. The
Network adapter listed should match the type of ethernet card you have
in your computer.
- If there is no Network Adapter or TCPIP listed, follow the steps below
accordingly.
- Adding a Network Card or Adapter if not listed
- Click on Cancel.
- Double click on Add New Hardware.
- Single click on Next.
- Select Yes (Recommended).
- Single click on Next.
- Windows 95 will search for your Network card. Don't use your computer
while Windows 95 is detecting hardware devices. When it is done, click
on Finish. Windows 95 may ask for its diskettes or CD, and it may ask to
restart your computer. You must let it restart your computer for changes
to take effect.
- Adding the TCP/IP Protocol if not listed
- If TCP/IP is not listed: Click on Add.... and then on Protocol,
and then on Add.
- Select Microsoft from the list of Manufacturers.
- Select TCP/IP, and click OK.

Configuring TCP/IP Protocol
|
| |
- Select TCP/IP from the list of installed network components,
and click on Properties.
- Under the "IP Address" tab, select Specify an IP address.
- In the "IP Address field", enter your IP number, in the
form ###.###.###.###, e.g., 131.193.154.102
- In the "Subnet Mask" field, enter 255.255.255.0
- Under the "Gateway" tab, enter the first three sets of numbers
of your IP address and then a "1" as the fourth set. For example,
if your IP address is 128.248.100.220, then the Gateway will be 128.248.100.1
Click on Add when you've completed this.
- Under the "DNS Configuration" tab, select "Enable DNS"
and then type your computer's host name in the "Host" field and
your computer's domain name in the "Domain" field. For example,
if V012.math.uic.edu were the entire host name of your computer, V012
would be entered into the "Host" field, and math.uic.edu
would be entered in the "Domain" field.
- In the DNS server search order, type: 128.248.171.50 and click
on Add.
- Repeat the previous step for UIC's two other name servers: 128.248.7.50
and 128.248.2.50.
- Now click OK. Click OK one more time on the Network
Window to finish Network setup.
- Windows may ask for Windows 95 disks or CD-ROM. It may also ask you
to restart Windows 95.
- Now you can run both 32 bit and 16 bit Winsock (TCP/IP) applications
like Netscape, Eudora, Telnet, etc. To start any of them, click on
Start,
then Programs, then Network Services Kit, and then select the program
you want to run.
