Summer College

The Academic Center for Excellence College Reading for Success

Program Description
Welcome to an introductory course for college level reading. This class teaches the fundamentals of college-level reading and analysis for students making the transition from high school to UIC. Learning how to master college level reading material requires a great deal of work and effort. The goal of this course is to provide the student with the tools and techniques necessary for learning how to actively engage with and master the complexities of college level essays and articles. It also provides the student the opportunity to practice their reading skills in a class room environment that is both friendly and dynamic. The teaching method for this course employs the use of open dialogue and focused discussion. The reading assignments vary in subject matter and disciplines to help introduce students to a variety of topics for discussion. Reading material will include scholarly essays and some college textbook excerpts. At the end of the course, the student will be better prepared to begin the transition from high school to college level reading and to do so with both confidence and competence.
