76 SSNs of students from 1998 accidentally exposed

The Academic Computing and Communications Center (ACCC) at UIC was notified that a web page dating from 1998 displaying real names and social security numbers for 76 former students was accessible via the web.

ACCC immediately disabled access to the web page and took action to have all copies of the web page removed from various web search engine caches. We also attempted to notify all affected students via the U.S. mail.

Although letters were sent to all known postal addresses for the affected individuals, we were unsuccessful in reaching thirteen of the seventy six people for whom SSNs were exposed.

Of the 76 people involved, we were unable to reach 13 individuals who were students at UIC in 1998. For security reasons, we are only providing the initials of the people we were unable to reach: BSC, BDP, CLB, CMN, DS, DK, EM, JHY, LVN, MQH, PJP, SP, and THD.

  • If you were not a UIC student in 1998, you are not affected.
  • If your initials are not in this list and you have not already received mail stating that your information was accidentally released, then you are also not affected.

If your initials match any of those listed, and you were a UIC student in 1998, then you can find out if you are one of the 13 affected individuals by contacting ACCC at (312) 413-8080 (press option 2). If they do indeed represent your name, you may leave your current address with ACCC and we will immediately mail you a copy of the letter you were intended to receive.
