Adobe Acrobat 4 How-To: Acrobat Assistant

Acrobat Assistant can run in the background (it puts an icon into the system tray), watching certain folders, and whenever a PostScript file is placed into these, it automatically launches Acrobat Distiller to convert them to PDF format. However, to print via Distiller, it is not necessary to have Acrobat Assistant running on startup.

In any Windows print dialogue, select Acrobat Distiller from the list of installed printers. Distiller's job-options can not be set via the Properties button, but have to be chosen by running Distiller as a stand-alone application first. Click on OK.

You will be prompted to specify a file name. On clicking OK, you have a PDF file. Whether the document will now be displayed depends on the general Distiller preferences you need to set when running it stand-alone.
