Distiller or PDFwriter?
Which Acrobat printer driver should you use for what purpose? Here are a few
guidelines:
- PDFwriter is faster and simpler to use.
Its job options are available directly within the print dialogue.
- PDFwriter is generally fine for on-screen display.
- PDFwriter can not properly handle EPS files. It embeds their bitmap preview
instead of the vector graphic. These are by default downsampled, producing
fuzziness.
- Distiller options have to be set when running the application stand-alone.
The settings last chosen are used when printing via Distiller Assistant.
- Distiller offers a wider range of options. It can even generate thumbnails
automatically.
- Distiller should be used where higher quality output matters.
- When you already have a PostScript file, just distill it. You can even specify
security settings.
- When using PDFmaker with MS Word 97, only Distiller can preserve document
info, hyperlinks, bookmarks, footnotes etc.
