Configuring Netscape

There are some basic steps you should take to make Netscape work for you:

Appearance

In the Edit menu, click on Preferences. A window opens:

If you are at your own computer, you may want to specify a Home Page here (the first page that opens at startup, so it should really be called Start Page). This is the page that you will be taken to when clicking the Home button on the main toolbar. To set it, simply navigate to the desired page, then open Edit-> Preferences and click on Use current Page. Or enter the URL directly, as in the picture above. Note that this change will become effective only when you click OK, but you may want to make some other changes in your preferences first (OK closes the preferences window).

You can also specify your preferred colors and fonts, even font sizes. This is helpful if you have legibility problems. Click on Fonts at top left to see the dialogue on the right. Many webpages are designed to work well with specific fonts and may not display well with your preferred choice though, so you should check Use document-specified fonts unless you have a serious reading problem. Dynamic Fonts are fonts downloaded by the browser in case they are not installed on your system. If you wish to see pages exactly the way they were meant to look, check this option.

Mail Options

In the menu-tree on the left, expand the Mail & Newsgroups submenu by clicking on the little plus-sign to the left of Mail & Newsgroups:

Under Identity enter who you are: name and email-address. If you wish to append a signature-file to all your messages, you can browse for it here.

Under Mail Servers you need to specify what server you use to send out mail. Unless you do that, you will not be able to send mail from mailto:-links in webpages. On campus, or when dialed in to UIC, this is smtpserv1.cc.uic.edu

More options will be explained in the section Advanced Configuration.
