Some web pages that you can access from UIC, such as the Encyclopedia Britannica have access restrictions that limit their access to UIC internet address only. When you use an Internet Service Provider, however, the internet address that you are coming from is no longer an UIC one, and therefore access to the site is denied.
To overcome this restriction, please follow these instructions
Note: the method described here will not work if you use the Microsoft Network (MSN) as an Internet Service provider.
1) You will need a valid UIC netid and password: we will need to verify UIC affiliation to allow access to these web sites.
2) You need to setup your web browser:
For Netscape 4:
1. Pull down the "Edit" menu and select "Preferences"
2. In the "Preferences" box, under "category," select "Advanced"
3. Select "Proxies"
4. Click "Automatic Proxy Configuration" and enter the url:
http://www.uic.edu/proxy.pac in the box
5. Click on the "reload" button and then on "OK" to close the window.
For Netscape 2 or 3:
1. Pull down the "Options" menu and select "Network Preferences"
2. Select "Proxies" in the window that opens
3. Click "Automatic Proxy Configuration" and enter the url:
http://www.uic.edu/proxy.pac in the box
4. Click on the "apply" button and then on "OK" to close the window.
For Internet Explorer 2.0:
It isn't compatible. You will need to upgrade your software.
For Internet Explorer 3.0 and higher (Win95 and NT)
1. On the View menu, click "Options"
2. Click the "Connections" tab
3. In the proxy server area, select "Connect Through a Proxy Server" check
box 4. Click "Settings", then type in the http box: www.uic.edu/proxy.pac
and in the "port" box, type 80
3. Click on "OK" to save the settings.
For Internet Explorer 3.01 and higher (Macintosh)
1. Pull down the "Edit" menu and select "Preferences"
2. Scroll down the left hand column and select "Proxies" under the "Network" menu
3. On the "Proxy" screen click the enabled box.
4. Pull down the "Protocol" menu and select "HTTP"
5. Pull down the "Method" menu, select "Normal"
6. In the address box type www.uic.edu/proxy.pac
7. Type 80 in the port box.
8. Click on "OK" to save the settings.
When you try to connect to any of the following resources from outside the uic.edu domain, you will be prompted for your netid and password and then connected to the resource. Once validated, you will stay authorized for about an hour. If you change databases your validation will continue. After your validation has expired, you will be prompted to revalidate.
The following resources can be used as described above:
Questions about using any of these resources may be directed by telephone to the Main Library Reference Department at 996-2726 or to the Research Consultation Office in the Library of the Health Sciences at 996-9163, or by e-mail to lib-sugg@uic.edu.
