Instructor's Presentation Notes

This document contains information and tidbits of interest to instructors giving a live presentation on Introduction to Student Computing.

The Introduction to Student Computing seminar materials provide extensive coverage on computing at UIC, which can not be conceivably covered during a live 50-minute presentation or two.

Presentation modules
The seminar is designed to be presented with a Web browser, like Netscape. We have divided the materials into independent modules which can be mixed and matched, as necessary. Furthermore, we have grouped the modules into a set of recommended modules and a set of optional modules to help deciding what to teach.

Each module has a suggested presentation time to be spent on the topic. Some modules include short show-and-tell demonstrations to help illustrating and teaching the subject matter.

The sessions on Accessing the Internet, Windows 98, and Word 97/WordPerfect don't have supporting Web pages. For these, instructors are urged to either give a quick demonstration of the product, or to go over and review the corresponding ACCC seminar materials.

Tell your students...
Please point out to the students that these materials are available on the Web. Encourage them to revisit the Web pages on their own to follow the many hyperlinks and to further learn what's available. There is a lot of material and links on these pages that will not be covered during the live presentations.

Teaching on your own?
To teach this Introduction to Student Computing seminar, you need a networked computer connected to a projection system.

For groups of 30 or less students, you could reserve one of several ACCC public computer labs equipped with all that is needed to give the presentation, including computers for some hands-on exercises, if your time schedule allows it.

To reserve an ACCC computer lab, please visit the ACCC Lab Reservation page located at http://www.uic.edu/depts/adn/cso/roomres.html, or send your request to labreservation@uic.edu. You could also make all the necessary arrangements through the ACCC Client Services Office.

For larger groups, we recommend you pursue reserving one of the university's multimedia classrooms by contacting the Timetable Office or OCS at 3-3640, 103 DH or classrooms@uic.edu.

NOTE: Please note that creating computer accounts is an overnight process. If you plan to have students log in during your seminar, make sure to tell them to obtain their computer accounts well in advance. For more information, see the module on Obtaining a computer account.

Can the ACCC teach these courses?
The ACCC already teaches a number of these seminars. You can always obtain the latest schedule by visiting the Seminars home page: http://www.uic.edu/depts/adn/seminars. Unfortunately we don't have the personnel required to teach all the Introduction to Student Computing sessions.

Currently, work is being done on a CD that introduces computing at UIC. Once completed, it will be made available for students and faculty. It can be used as a reference tool as you teach your Introduction to Student Computing seminars.

We want your comments!
We have worked hard and will continue to work hard on improving the Introduction to Student Computing Web pages. We'll appreciate your comments, please send them to seminars@uic.edu.

Have fun introducing your students to computing at UIC!
