Quick Introduction to UNIX

UNIX is the operating system running on Icarus and Tigger. To access UNIX systems like Icarus, one must first run Telnet, and then login with a login ID (aka computer account) and login password.

Typically, students access the Icarus UNIX system in text mode, i.e. with all or most interaction being done with the keyboard, in command line mode.

One peculiar aspect of UNIX is that it is case sensitive: most commands and instructions are usually entered in lower case.

To use Pine on Icarus, simply Telnet into Icarus and type pine as soon as you are logged in.

Basic information on UNIX, designed for UNIX novices is available at UNIX 101: Basic UNIX.

Instructors: please login to Icarus and demonstrate a few UNIX commands like passwd, man, ls, pwd, cd, mkdir, rmdir, cat, cp, mv, chmod, quota and pine. (5 minutes)
