The DOS system was organized on a directory system, not too unlike a file cabinet. Inside of a directory, you can store files, or you can store another directory, called a subdirectory, inside that directory. This would create a hierarchy of directories. With the graphical interface of Windows 95, directories are now called folders. These folders can be created anywhere you want.
In the example below, we'll create a folder on the desktop. (NOTE: in the organization of folders, the desktop is a folder itself) To create a folder, right-click on an open area of the desktop.
When you choose the Folder option under New, the computer creates a new folder
at the specified location like this.
You should IMMEDIATELY give the folder a new name. You can type
in a name up to 255 characters, including spaces, and hit the [ENTER] key to
accept the new name. Click here to see a video
demo of this. (70K)
