Creating Files

Creating a file is the same as creating a folder. When you select the New option under the shortcut menu, the computer lists some of the major programs that are on your computer. You can select any of these that you desire, and the computer will create a file for the application. This is a change from Windows 3.1, where you had to be in an application to create a file for it. In the following example, we'll choose "Microsoft Word Document" from the list of choices.

Like a folder, you should immediately give the file a name and hit [ENTER] to accept it. If you double-click the icon, it will launch the proper application (Microsoft Word in this case) and open that file.

Renaming Files

If the need arises to rename a file, it is a simple process. Simply right-click the icon in question and choose Rename from the shorcut menu. This will select the name of the file, at which time you can type in a new name. An alternate method is to click the icon so that its selected, then click on the actual name of the icon. Here is the above icon with a new name. Click here for a video demo of a rename. (69K)
