It has been often suggested that users should type up their documents first, then format the text to meet their own needs. Word processors allow you to select, or highlight, text to make editing or formatting changes to it. To select text using the mouse, you can click-and-drag across the text in question. You can also use [SHIFT] with the four arrow keys to select text. The following table lists some other methods for selecting text with both the mouse and the keyboard:
| ACTION | MICROSOFT WORD | COREL WORD PERFECT |
| To select a single word | Point to the word with your mouse and double-click | Same as Word |
| To select a series of words | Click on the first word, then, while holding down [SHIFT], click on the second word | Same as Word |
| To select a sentence | Hold the [CTRL] key and click the sentence. | Triple-Click the sentence |
| To select a line | Click in the selection bar* | Same as Word |
| To select a paragraph | Triple click in the paragraph or double-click in the selection bar* | Same as Word |
| To select the entire document | [CTRL] + A or triple-click in the selection bar | [CTRL] + A or right-click in the margin and choose Select All in the menu |
| * The selection bar is a feature in Word & WordPerfect. Located down the left side of the document, your arrow will face up and RIGHT instead of up and left when you are over it. | ||
