Headers and Footers

You may wish to print out certain items that show up on every page of your document, such as a page number, the file name, or the date. For this, we have Headers and Footers. These print out in the top margin and bottom margin of each page. In order to make headers and footers, you should click on the Insert|Header/Footer menu.

You can create two types of headers and two types of footers. This allows you to put headers and footers on separate pages, typically even and odd-numbered pages. For our purposes, we will create Header A.

The line separates the header from the rest of the document.

Although we can type in whatever text we want in the header and footer, there are certain items we can choose automatically. For example, if we wish to enter the date, we can choose the Insert|Date/Time... menu.

We can then choose the date and time format we want. The check box at the bottom will keep it fully updated.

If we want to insert the name of a file, we can use the Insert|Other|Filename menu. Here is what our header now looks like.

While we are in the header or footer, a button shows up that will let us put in different kinds of page number formats. The Page Numbering button will allow us to put in the current page number and the total number of pages. However, it only inserts the NUMBERS. For example, if we wanted to say "Page 1 of 4", we would have to type the words Page, of, and any needed spaces. Here is what the footer looks like when we do that.
