The Chicago Tribune's "1995 Arts People of the Year" and one of seven "Chicagoans of the Year for 2002," Orbert Davis is one of
Chicago
's busiest and most sought after jazz artists.
Davis
has a bachelor's degree from
DePaul
University
and a Masters of Music in
Jazz
Pedagogy
from
Northwestern
University
. In addition to being a professional jazz musician, performer, and composer, he is a clinician and teacher, and has developed teacher-training curriculum for Urban Gateways, the
Illinois
Resource
Center,
and the Chicago Humanities Festival.
Davis
was Director of Curriculum Development for the Ravinia Jazz Mentorship Program and led the jazz mentors ensemble for five years. In 1999 he co-founded Discover Music: Discover Life, Inc., is the Founding and Artistic Director for the Chicago Jazz Philharmonic, and is an Associate Professor of music at the
University
of
Illinois
at
Chicago
.
He has recorded over 2500 television and radio commercials and projects for
Atlantic
, Capitol, CBs, Epic, MCA, and the Warner Brothers record labels. Other projects include arrangements and on-camera performance for feature films such as "A League of Their Own," starring Tom Hanks, Madonna and Rosie O'Donnell for Columbia Pictures and" The Babe," starring John Goodman. He was the jazz consultant for Academy Award winning director, Sam Mendes, for the DreamWorks Pictures feature film "Road to Perdition," starring Tom Hanks and Paul Newman, where he also had a cameo appearance.
He has received composition awards and commissions from the Illinois Arts Council, the Aaron Copland Fund and the City of
Chicago
