A non-technical survey of the history and development of jazz from its West African roots to contemporary styles. 

Jazz Improvisation (MUS 120)

Small Jazz Ensemble (MUS 160)

This ensemble focuses on performance techniques within the historical development of the American jazz ensemble.  This performance ensemble will perform for various events across the UIC campus and Chicago community.

Jazz Ensemble (MUS 159)

Practical experience in the preparation and public performance of music from the big band repertoire.  The jazz ensemble will have opportunity to perform at various events across the UIC campus and Chicago community. 

Jazz Aesthetics (MUS 220)

A topical course that covers factors and topics that permeate the study, development and production of jazz: 

• The African Diaspora / African Americanism
• The components of jazz – a detailed analysis of swing, the blues, improvisation and cross-genre relationships.
• Jazz Styles and Analysis – building a jazz repertoire for listening and performing
• The Life of the Jazz Musician / The Jazz Scene
