The Dept. of Performing Arts is starting a string ensemble in spring semester, 2008. Open to all UIC students, staff and faculty with training, the group will fill a longtime gap in ensemble offerings at the Chicago campus and meet the needs of the many string players looking for a place to make music at the University.

Prof. Gene Collerd, for 32 years director of the Concert Band, will rehearse the string ensemble Monday and Wednesdays from 4:15-6 p.m. It will be offered for credit as Music 157. Rehearsals will be held in Room L060 of the Education Performing Arts Social Work Building at 1040 W. Harrison St. Lockers for storing instruments are available.

Violinists, violists, and cellists should have at least four years of playing experience and two years of private lessons. Double bassists should have played for at least two years and had the equivalent of one year of private study.

Auditions will be held by appointment from Nov. 19 - Dec. 20. Students with appropriate background should register for Music 157 as soon as possible. Audition requirements include three minutes of prepared solo work, preferable music from two contrasting movements. Major scales through three flats and three sharps will also be asked. Sight reading may be included.

Repertoire for the spring term will be chosen from Tchaikovsky's Serenade for Strings, Grieg's Holberg Suite, Mozart Adagio and Fugue in C minor, Bach Suite No. 2 in B minor, Nielsen Bohemian Danish Folksong Paraphrase, Quincy Porter Music for Strings. Two concerts are planned.
