SYNOPSIS
The Lioness of Lisabi is a 20-minute short musical film about a Nigerian girl’s private and public struggles with her identity and with the patriarchal systems of tradition and colonialism in 1940s Abeokuta, Western Nigeria. This fictional story is loosely based on the life of Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti, the mother of musician, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti.

This is an independent film, written and produced by Professor Stephanie Shonekan of Columbia College's Cultural Studies program.  The project features cast and crew comprising Columbia College students and alumni, professional Chicago-area actors and filmmakers, and UIC faculty and students.  This is not a university-related project.  Rather, it is a short, “spec” film produced in the hopes of procuring financing for a full-length feature film.
