Welcome
to the
Department of
Anthropology and Program in Geography
at the
University of Illinois at Chicago!
Anthropology is the study of human
cultural and biological diversity over time and space. The expertise of
our faculty gives students the opportunity to pursue interests in most
of the major eras and geographical areas of the world.
The Department of Anthropology offers programs in
Anthropology and Geography, at both the undergraduate and graduate
levels. The department has research laboratories supporting studies in
archaeology, sociocultural anthropology, physical anthropology, and
environmental and urban geography.
Our archaeology faculty offers opportunities for
student
fieldwork and data analysis; as well as facilities for and training in
microwear
analysis. The program in biological anthropology emphasizes
paleoanthropology and human evolution.
There are training opportunities
and affiliated faculty at the Medical Center on the campus, and at the
Field Museum of Natural History. In fact, our department and the Field
Museum of Natural
History
have a joint program
whereby students can, under the direction of a
curator, use the collections and facilities of the museum for research
projects. Students interested in pursuing a course of study in the
conservation of anthropological materials should contact faculty at the
Field Museum.
The program in cultural and social anthropology,
while
emphasizing theoretical and topical diversity, has area emphases in
Africa, South Asia, Europe, Oceania, and the Americas.
The program in environmental and urban geography
provides opportunities in the areas of geomorphology and sedimentary
analysis, cartography, geographical analysis, spatial analysis and
geographic information systems (GIS).
