Social anthropology, Dravidian languages, ethnography of medicine, visual anthropology; Southern Asia, Ireland. China Paul Hockings was trained in anthropology at the universities of Sydney, Toronto, Chicago, Stanford and California, and has done fieldwork in southern India and the west of Ireland. His major areas of interest are the cultural anthropology and history of India, South Asian demography, linguistics, and visual anthropology. For the past ten years he has been Editor of the journal Visual Anthropology, and also edited the standard textbook on the subject, Principles of Visual Anthropology (1995). He recently was an editor of the Encyclopedia of World Cultures, and is currently editing the Encyclopedia of Asia. As the noted demographer John Caldwell said of one recent book, Kindreds of the Earth, "Paul Hockings, almost uniquely in the field of anthropological demography, is reporting a longitudinal study of 26 years of measurement and cultural change. The study is almost certainly a reliable guide to an explanation of what will eventually happen over much of the [Indian] subcontinent."
