I am excited that we will be launching a joint degree program in Anthropology and Global Health (AGH) in 2008. I see health as negotiation of interacting, overlapping and competing processes at many different levels – this program will allow students to cross disciplinary boundaries and apply mixed methodologies to important global health issues.

Research Interests:
In general, my research interests focuses on the interface of biology and culture, but I am especially interested in how social conditions interact and conflict to produce health and wellbeing at individual and population levels:

Applied Medical Anthropology

  • Biosocial/biocultural perspectives on global health
  • Nutrition, Reproduction, Wellbeing
  • Gender

Intersections of Anthropology and Public Health

  • Health disparities
  • Global health initiatives
  • East Africa
  • Refugees

Past research
Pregnancy outcome and breastfeeding practices in rural Tanzania

Current research:
Refugee: Food insecurity in recently resettled African refugee communities, NSF with Dr. Craig Hadley.

Tanzania: A biocultural examination of the peripartum period, Wenner-Gren Foundation with Elizabeth Abrams.
