ADMISSION
TO THE M.A. DEGREE IN ENVIRONMENTAL AND URBAN GEOGRAPHY
Interested
students are counselled about the several types of admission to
graduate studies. The majority of the applicants are admitted to full
standing. However, the program's approach to limited standing and
non-degree admissions is liberal. Students admitted on limited standing
are required to complete a remedial set of courses before they can
apply for full status. In the case of applicants who lack sufficient
undergraduate preparation in geography, their remedial work is set at
upper division core courses from the program for the B.A. in Geography.
Admissions decisions are made by the Director of Graduate Studies in
consultation with selected members of the graduate faculty with
expertise in the student's area of interest.
Regular Admission
Applicants are considered on an individual basis. They must have a
baccalaureate or its equivalent from an accredited college or
university and a grade point average of at least 4.00 (A=5.00) for the
final 60 semester hours (90 quarter hours) of undergraduate study. In
exceptional cases, students with averages of less than 4.00 but above
3.75 may be admitted if they can show substantial promise of ability to
complete the program successfully.
Applicants must submit three letters
of recommendation and scores from the Graduate Record Examination.
Prospective students holding degrees in other disciplines are
encouraged to apply. The program accepts the minimum Graduate College
requirements for the submission of transcripts.
Non-degree
Admission
The Graduate Faculty in the Geography Program encourages applications
from non-degree students. Applicants need only meet the minimum
requirements of the Graduate College. All geography courses are open to
nondegree students. Applicants should consult with the Director of
Graduate Studies if they are considering applying for regular admission
in geography at a later date.
