REQUIREMENTS
FOR ADMISSION TO MASTERS PROGRAM:
In order to apply for admission you will need:
- a
baccalaureate, or equivalent, from an accredited college or university,
here or abroad;
- a
cumulative grade point average of at least 3.00 (A=4.00) for the final
60 semester hours (90 quarter hours) of undergraduate study, including
all of the work taken in the semester (quarter) in which the student
began the final 60 semester hours of undergraduate study. The
cumulative grade point average obtained in all work completed beyond
the baccalaureate may also be computed and considered;
- transcripts
from those institutions where the student has earned (bachelor's and
master's), and transcripts from all other colleges and universities
attended in the last eight years. If the degrees were earned more than
eight but less than fifteen years prior to the semester for which
admission was sought, only transcripts from those institutions where
the student earned degrees are required. If the prospective student has
not enrolled in a college or university for more than fifteen years
prior to the quarter for which admission is sought, only proof of the
degrees held is required;
- three
letters of recommendation, preferably from past professors;
- statement
of academic/professional goals (750-1000 words) and;
- Graduate
Record Examination scores are required.

FOR ADMISSION TO DOCTORAL PROGRAM
In order to apply for admission you
will need:

FOR FULFILLMENT OF A DOCTORAL DEGREE IN ANTHROPOLOGY
- A minimum
of 96 semester hours of graduate-level course work, beyond their BA, of
which no more than 32 semester hours can be transfer credits and no
more than 32 hours of dissertation research.
- During
the first year in the program, all students, including transfer
students with a master's in Anthropology, must take ANTH 500, 501, 502
and 503, and pass these core courses with grades of "B" or better. A
grade of "C" is unacceptable and the course must be repeated. 2 grades
of "C" and student will be dropped from the program.
- Students
who received their MA in anthropology and have passed UIC
Anthropology's graduate core courses may submit for the approval of the
Graduate Committee the name of the of the chairperson for their
doctoral committee. This chairperson/supervisor must be a full member
of the UIC Graduate Faculty.
- After
approval of the graduate committee, the student's
chairperson/supervisor will then submit the names of four additional
faculty who, plus the chairperson/supervisor, will constitute the
student's doctoral committee.
- The
students will be required to take a Preliminary Examination that is
written and administered by the doctoral committee. Only students in
good academic standing may take the exam.
- The
student will be required to be proficient in a foreign language which
will be determined by the doctoral committee.
- The final
requirement is a public, oral Doctoral dissertation defense. This
defense must be announced at least one week prior to its occurrence. A
complete draft of the dissertation should be submitted for comment to
all members of the doctoral committee at least 4 weeks before any date
for an oral defense is officially sent.
- The
maximum time limit allowed by the Graduate College for the Ph.D. is 9
years from a student's admission with a baccalaureate degree and 7
years from admission with a master's degree. These time limits can be
extended for an additional year with department and Graduate College
approval.
