The Department of Art History is devoted to the investigation of the visual environment, from suburban tract housing and South Asian Stupas to the photographs of Jeff Wall and the sculpture of Donatello.

Chicago

At the crossroads of the United States, Chicago is one of the world's most exciting cities. With its vibrant and often turbulent history, its remarkable heritage of artmaking, building and manufacturing, its superb museums, galleries, libraries and universities, Chicago offers an ideal setting for the study of architecture and art.

Faculty

The range of faculty scholarly research and publication is both broad and deep. In addition to numerous books and articles, members of the Art History faculty have written art criticism, introductory essays for exhibition catalogs and have contributed catalogues raisonné entries on a wide range of subjects. In addition, the faculty includes members with professional degrees in the practice of architecture, others who have curated public exhibitions and, in some cases, are practicing artists.

Programs

The department offers the BA, MA, and PhD in Art History

Students come from a wide variety of backgrounds and have different objectives. For some, Art History is a superb introduction to the broad world of history and culture and a place to refine their skills in critical reading, writing, and analysis. For others who go on to advanced degrees, the programs serve as a way to enter professions affiliated with art history - from teaching and research in colleges and universities to curatorship in museum or gallery settings to historic preservation and architectural research.
