Field Trips

Colloquium field trips give students the opportunity to explore various aspects of biology that can not be experienced during the small group trips due to time, distance, or limited accommodations. Along with the educational experience, field trips provide students with the opportunity to establish social interactions extending from the small groups to the entire class. The trips are usually taken on a weekend and last anywhere from half a day to an entire weekend. Students are welcome to bring non-Colloquium friends. Field trips in the past have included trips to the U of I School of Veterinary Medicine, various industrial laboratories, Indiana Dunes, Morton Arboretum, Saukville Biological Field Station and Starved Rock State Park.

At the end of the spring semester, a big trip takes Colloquium students to a national park or a biological field station. This trip usually lasts a week and in the past has been a great source of learning and entertainment. Past end-of-the-year field trips have included Beaver Island Field Station, Lake Itasca Minnesota Field Station, Mammoth Cave National Park and Mountain Lake Biological Station.

Here are some photos of our most recent spring trip (2010) to Hancock Biological Station and the Garden of the Gods!
