Student Leaders

Student leaders are the individuals that BCQ students interact with most, so they are largely responsible for defining the BCQ experience to students. Student leaders manage a small group of students by planning their own individual small group field trips, collecting & evaluating students' journals, and taking attendance.

If you are a current or past Colloquium student interested in becoming a student leader, find out about the application process at the bottom of the page.

Justine Benin
My name is Justine Benin. I am in my fourth year majoring in Biological Sciences at UIC. Currently, I am heavily involved in volunteering at UIC Medical Center in Pediatrics and several other hospitals in the Chicagoland area. When I'm not studying or volunteering, I'm working as a pharmacy tech in the suburbs. I took BCQ about a year ago and enjoyed how it helped keep my mind open about what I want to do in the future. My interests went from becoming a nurse to becoming a physician. This class even opened doors for me in research with a neurologist at UIC's Neuropsychiatric Institute. In spite of all these activities, I still enjoy running, going to the driving range, or playing tennis in my free time. I hope that everyone who takes BCQ will get as much out of it as I have!
Gus Garritano
Hey, I'm Gus. I'm an Ultra Senior and a bio major. I work for the UIC audio visual department. Hmmm. That's really about it…. I don't have any cavities….that's something I suppose. Oh I used a couple whitening strips the other week. They kinda did something. Hmmm… what else… Well, I've starting listening to the music of Philip Glass lately. Any fans? I didn't think so. And…... I accidentally bought the same shoes as my roommate so now we can't go anywhere together. Er, I'm learning how to solve a Rubic's Cube. It's not as impressive a skill as you might think. One time I hit a turkey with my car. I couldn't swerve around it cause I was too busy thinking "…is that a turkey?" Also, I hit a beaver. On a bridge.

Paul Green
Hi my name is Paul Green. I am a junior. I am majoring in biological sciences and taking things one step at a time. I did not know what to expect when I first joined this class. So...um get excited to learn alot, meet good people, and have fun! I am looking forward to a fantastic semester with all of you. Also, I just wanted to point out, I can hoola-hoop.

Hi! My name is Michelle and I am a senior. I love to interact with people and help them explore biology. I hope to become a biology professor or teacher and I have a genuine interest in teaching. Besides school, I love to cook and bird watch. These are mostly activities that I use to relieve stress and I can help you do the same! BCQ is a great class to physically explore biology rather than just reading about it. This is what makes me even more excited to teach it.

Matthew Manious
My name is Matt Manious. I have a fraternal twin brother who is almost twice my size so it would be alright to call me Little as do most of my close friends. I have always been intrigued with science and the medical field especially because in my childhood I was at the hospital every winter for about a week exposed to doctors who always found a way to cure my sickness.

I have met so many friends though BCQ and learned lots of valuable information from speakers throughout the course of the semester. The leaders are extremely cool and fun to hangout with. In addition, I have found awesome research opportunities by taking advantage of one of the many opportunities given. I hope to aid in maximizing other students to find a career that they are particularly interested in while having FUN!!
Nisreen Tayebjee
I am a third year Biology major with a minor in Chemistry. I am interested in a lot of things, which is probably why I am having such a hard time figuring out what my focus will be after I graduate. Thankfully BCQ helped me narrow my choices, so I am in much better shape than I was a semester ago. Through BCQ I met a professor who offers a research internship program during the summer. Along with his 3 of his graduate students and 2 other undergraduates, I will be going to Mexico for 2 ½ months to do research in Veracruz, Mexico. I enjoy lots of things especially travelling, learning about different cultures and meeting new people. BCQ is a great class it opens option you never thought off and you meet lots of great people.

Michael Plachta
Hi! My name is Michael Plachta, and I'm a pre-med biology major at UIC. I am applying to medical school this year, so I am swamped with MCATs, secondary applications, and debt. I grew up in a little farming town outside of Peoria, but I fell in love with the city when I came here. I spend a lot of my time riding my bike around Chicago, looking fun things to eat/do/buy. One of my favorite spots is the Maxwell Street Market on Sunday mornings. I like the fact that you can buy a lawnmower or chandelier from the same vendor. You may even get a deal if you buy both. I also found out I love ping-pong when I came to UIC. Every player has their own style, sort of like Kung Fu. I played tennis pretty well, but I guess I got tired of running. I am also a bit of a nerd. I like thinking about and discussing goofy topics in biology, chemistry, and physics. BCQ was great last semester because the speakers that came in to talk about their occupations or research were really interesting. Also, it was fun to meet and hang out with other biology folks. I hope that this semester I can make it just as fun by being a student leader!
Duyen Tran
Hi my name is Duyen Tran. It is nice to meet all of you! I am a freshman planning to major in Biological Science. I love hiking, camping, and enjoying the outdoors. I am in love with science and especially nature and mountains. I am not sure what I want to become in the near future, but with the help BCQ provides, I am sure I will one day find something I would love to study and enjoy learning. I started off as a lonely freshmen drifting away from my social life, but after I took BCQ for 2 semesters, I made new friends and I looked forward to learn new things and experience things I have never done before. I never new BCQ existed until the class was offered during my Biology lecture. After I knew about this class, I immediately signed up for it. I wasn’t sure if I made the right decision. But guess what? I never regret taking this class because I enjoyed it so much that I looked forward to walk through the BCQ door every week! I am sure everyone else can find their interest with the help from BCQ.

Becoming A Student Leader

If you are a current or past Colloquium student, we invite you to apply for a student leader position. There are many perks to being a student leader. When you become a student leader, you'll be able to earn 2 biology 200-level credits (BioS 296). In addition to helping you graduate, the Biology Colloquium has a great office with many useful facilities for student leaders to use. The office has a nice, almost too comfortable sofa; 3 computers for e-mailing, writing papers, and playing games; a refrigerator and microwave for storing and heating food; an almost constant supply of snacks; and a mesmerizing aquarium of aquatic snails. Furthermore, several times a semester, student leaders are treated to dinner when the Colloquium holds a staff meeting.

To apply, simply click one of the links below to download the relatively short Student Leader Application either as a Microsoft Word file or as an Adobe Acrobat PDF. Print out the document, read the directions, and hand it in to the Colloquium office before the end of finals week once you have finished filling it out. After receiving the applications, the student coordinators will then contact you to set up a brief interview.
