Graduate Application
The Department of Biological Sciences offers graduate degrees in three program areas, Ecology and Evolution, Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology, and Neurobiology. Your application materials will be reviewed by faculty committees representing the research program or programs to which you are applying. Priority is given to students pursuing the Ph.D. degree; however, well-qualified applicants for the M.S. degree may also be considered. Students are normally considered and admitted for fall semester only.
Our primary season for review is the mid-January through March. While January 1st is a department guideline, rather than a deadline, we strongly encourage applicants to submit all materials by that date in order to receive fullest consideration.
To our applicants for Fall 2009 admission
We will be introducing a new online application process in early November. The required documents and materials will not change, but the process for submitting them will be easier and faster than the current paper-based process. We strongly encourage all applicants to wait until the new system is available online, and to apply at that time. However, if you prefer to apply before the new system is available, you can follow the instructions listed below.
A complete application includes:
- Graduate College Application
- Application fee ($50 USD for domestic, $60 USD for international applicants)
-
- 3 Letters of Recommendation
- Personal Statement
- GRE General Exam scores
- TOEFL score for international students whose native language is not English
- Official, sealed transcripts
Students can consult the Summary of Application Procedures for greater detail.
Please mail all hard-copy materials directly to the department at the following address. The department makes a copy of materials required by UIC's central Office of Graduate Admissions (e.g. transcripts, etc.) for our review and then forwards the originals to them.

All students admitted to the department are offered some form of financial support, which carries a monthly stipend of $1804 and a waiver of all tuition and the service fee. Support may come from any of a variety of sources, such as teaching assistantships, research assistantships, or fellowships. Historically, students remaining in good standing (maintaining at least a B average in course work and making progress in their research) have received support for the entire term of their graduate studies.
