Advising After Your First Semester

During your first semester, Margaret Kleist will be your primary source for advising. After you have settled in, you should begin to think about selecting your advisor and thesis committee. Your committee will work with you to help you decide on appropriate coursework and research goals. The University has specific guidelines about the composition of the M.S. defense committee, the Ph.D. preliminary exam committee, and the Ph.D. defense committee.

Beth Brand, our graduate advisor, will work with you and your committee to help you navigate through the deadlines, paperwork, and general requirements for the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees. Ultimately, however, you are entirely responsible for making sure you fulfill your requirements and meet your deadlines. Therefore, you should familiarize yourself with the departmental and university policies governing graduate study.

Within the Department, the three program areas have independent policies regarding the selection of an advisor. Visit your program area's web site to find out more about choosing an advisor and committee.
