Why Major in Biological Sciences?

Whether your career goal is to be a marine biologist, molecular biologist, or pursue a medical career, UIC is the place to start.

The department boasts many talented faculty who teach the courses and many open the doors of their labs to undergraduates who want research experience. Curators from the Field Museum of Natural History also teach in our department. We also have two professional academic advisors who are here to assist you in planning your courses as well as being a resource for other questions.

A unique aspect of our department is the Biology Colloquium (BCQ) (BIOS 196). This student run course offers an opportunity for Freshmen & Sophomores to learn about a variety of career directions as well as meet fellow majors in a friendly atmosphere. Junior & Senior BCQ veteran students assist in planning & running the course. Two faculty advisors are also on hand to assist & for students to communicate with. This is a great way to make a REAL connection with a faculty member.

Internships & Study Abroad

Both internships and study abroad programs will enhance your curriculum and give you invaluable experience that you cannot achieve through coursework alone. Internships will give you the chance to try out different types of jobs and learn new skills in the process. Students who intend to apply to graduate or professional schools will also benefit from internships. You can use the work experience as an opportunity to learn more about your intended field and give yourself an edge on applications as well.

Internship and study abroad information is posted on the bulletin boards in the 3200 hall of SES.

Some of our postings come directly from the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences Cooperative Education and Internship Program. The Co-Op Program assists students with internship placements. Interested students should also look at the excellent biology internship resource maintained by the Rochester Institute of Technology. The UIC Study Abroad Office assists students in choosing a program, locating funding, and picking classes to fulfill degree requirements.
