Minority Women Concerns

The Minority Women Concerns subcommittee addresses issues of particular concern to women of color. Its areas of focus include promoting and supporting research and evaluation intended to improve the status of women of color; helping to create a university climate that will help women of color to realize their educational and professional goals; and recommending changes in campus policy to assure the inclusion of women of color.

Gift Giving On A Budget VI: Upcycled T-shirt Scarves

CCSW - Minority Women Concerns subcommittee and Donate by Design student organization are teaming up to get crafty and give back to the community. Please join us as we make scarves from upcycled t-shirt. You’ll be amazed at how easy, fun, and fashionable it is to upcycle t-shirts. Make one to donate to a local organization that serves women and make a second for yourself. Please bring a t-shirts to upcycle and we’ll provide the rest of the supplies. Instructions will begin every 30 minutes to allow people to come and go as fits their schedule. Navigating Negotiations

CCSW-Staff Concerns subcommittee, CCSW-Minority Women Concerns subcommittee, and the Administrative Professionals Mentoring Program have joined forces to help you better communicate and negotiate. Emily Easton, Associate Dean of Students at The University of Chicago, will facilitate a discussion to help us improve our ability to effectively engage in negotiations.  Whether you want to ask for a raise, compromise during a challenging situation, or simply communicate more clearly when the stakes are high, come join us to learn how. RSVP by November 12th to kat@uic.edu.

We're also co-sponsoring the 2014 Native Amrican Heritage Celebration. A link to the event details will be added when it becomes available. Until then save the date for Crystal Kameman's keynote address on Friday, November 21st and Our Fire Still Burns: The Native American Experience with Director Audrey Geyer on Monday, November 24th.  

 

MEMBERSHIP AND LEADERSHIP OPPORTUNITIES:

  • Do you want to make a difference at UIC, ensure UIC is an equitable place for Minority Women, build your resume, and practice and develop your leadership skills?
  • If you can answer yes to the above questions, become a member of the CCSW Minority Women Concerns subcommittee. We are always accepting new members. Membership in the CCSW Minority Women Concerns subcommittee is simple. First, email or call the chairperson to let her know you want to be a member. Then provide assistance with developing ideas, planning, and staffing our various events. You are also asked to attend monthly subcommittee meetings as often as your schedule allows.
  • Currently we looking for women who are willing to become co-chairs of this subcommittee. Click here to email our co-chairs if you are interested, have suggestion of who would be able to do the position, or have any questions regarding the co-chair position.
