UIC Children’s Center

Classrooms/Staff

The Children's Center is licensed for 50 children and is made up of 3 classrooms. Children are care for in mixed age-groupings. The center has two classrooms made up of three-and four year old children. The ratio in this classroom is 2 adults to 16 children. The third classroom is made up of four-and five-year old children. The ratio in this classroom is two adults to 18 children.

The Children's Center staff is made up of 8 teachers and 2 directors who have specialized training in early childhood education and child development. All teachers and directors have four-year or graduate degrees in Early Childhood Education. In addition to the classroom co-teaching teams, there are 2 full-time float teachers. One float teacher opens the center, provides care for children needing to arrive before the classrooms open, and then works in all three classrooms on a rotating basis, substituting for absent teachers as necessary. The second float teacher provides care for children needing to stay at the Center after the classrooms close at 5:15 pm as well as works in all three classrooms, substituting for absent teachers as necessary.

Each classroom also has a teacher's aide who works from 1:00-3:30 to help settle the children for their nap/rest period. This is a part-time position for college students who are interested in working with young children.
