Changes coming to the Children’s Center August 2012
For nearly forty years‚ UIC Children’s Center has been providing quality
full-day early childhood education services to the children of students‚
faculty‚ and staff at two accredited on-campus locations. Over the past
several years‚ the Children’s Center has faced operational and financial
challenges. Falling enrollment at the east site‚ diminishing grant
funds‚ restrictions on funding eligibility‚ facility maintenance‚
increased competition from childcare alternatives in the UIC and other
neighborhood areas‚ and the dismal state of the economy have forced us
to some difficult decisions.
Center staff and current families were notified last week that in August
2012‚ at the start of that academic year‚ the Children’s Center will
consolidate both sites into the west side location. Returning children
will be given priority to remain in the consolidated program‚ and new
families for 2012 will not be admitted until we are certain that space
is available.
Fees‚ unfortunately‚ will also have to rise for the first time since
2008. We will continue to offer a sliding fee scale to UIC students. For
the 2012-2013 school year the fee range will be $95-$230 per week.
We are giving a full year’s notice of these changes to ensure that even
new families have ample time to plan ahead. We know that childcare is
one of your most important family decisions‚ and its cost is a
significant portion of the family budget.
Sincerely‚
Nancy L. Fineberg
