This conference is supported in part by a generous grant from the Russell Sage Foundation and an award from the American Sociological Association, Fund for the Advancement of the Discipline.
The Russell Sage Foundation is the principal American foundation devoted exclusively t o research in the social sciences. Located in New York City, the Foundation is a research center, a funding source for studies by scholars at other academic and research institutions, and an
active member of the nation's social science community. The Foundation also publishes, under its own imprint, the books that derive from the work of its grantees and visiting scholars.
The American Sociological Association (ASA), founded in 1905, is an non-profit membership association dedicated to advancing sociology as a scientific discipline and profession serving the public good. The American Sociological Association's Fund for the Advancement of the Discipline
(FAD) is designed to nurture the development of scientific knowledge by funding small, ground-breaking research initiatives and other important scientific research activities. FAD
awards provide scholars with venture capital for innovative research that has the potential for challenging the discipline, stimulating new lines of research, and creating new networks of
scientific collaboration. The award is intended to provide opportunities for substantive and methodological breakthroughs, broaden the dissemination of
scientific knowledge, and provide leverage for acquisition of additional research funds.
