UIC

The University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) is a comprehensive public university located in the heart of one of the nation's largest metropolitan areas. It is one of three campuses of the state of Illinois's land-grant university, the University of Illinois. Its mission comprises three traditional elements¾ teaching, research, and public service. Each element is shaped by and relevant to its metropolitan setting, as well as the University of Illinois's traditional pursuit of excellence. UIC serves not only the citizens of the state of Illinois, but also students from throughout the nation and the world who are attracted by both the University's programs and the metropolitan setting on which it draws and to which it contributes.

The Institute for Research on Race and Public Policy (IRRPP) is a research center in the UIC College of Urban Planning and Public Affairs. The Institute's mission is to develop and disseminate information and to influence the intersection of race and public policy. Further, the IRRPP hopes to improve the knowledge, understanding, and condition of historically underrepresented people of color as they are affected by, and as they affect, public policy.

The Department of Sociology offers programs of study leading to bachelor's, master's, and doctorate degrees. The department’s faculty members pursue research interests in four broad areas of the discipline: race, ethnicity, and gender; work, labor markets, and organizations; health and medicine; and international, comparative, and Asian societies. Department members have received research support from the National Science Foundation, the National Endowment for the Humanities, the National Institutes of Health, the Lilly Endowment, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, the Russell Sage Foundation, and other prominent funding agencies.
