Places to Eat Around UIC

There are many great places to have a meal near the UIC campus. With Greektown and Little Italy nearby, Chicago's best Italian food and Greek food is always just a walk away. If you want the exact address of the restaurant listed here, go to Yahoo and use the Yellow Pages.

Quick and Inexpensive Bites
Artopolis One of the cutest cafes in Greektown. This newly opened cafe also has a great bakery and bar.
Damenzo's On Taylor, a block or so east of Western. They serve a huge slice of pizza for $2.00 that literally can be shared two. They also are known for an enormous calzone for the same price.
Fontano's Quite possibly the best Italian subs in the world. These make a meal themselves and are identical in price to Subway. Bring along your student discount card for a free bag of chips and a drink.
Greektown Gyros Traditional Greek and American food, fast-food style. (Great gyros, of course.) Discount for UIC students with I-card.
Jimmy John's Huge subs, American style, with many selections to choose from. The bread alone makes it one of the best sub places around.
Lulu's On the corner of Ogden and Taylor. Has everything you could ask for (American, Italian, Greek) in a fast food joint. Very fast service, several daily specials and homemade pecan and sweet potato pie.
Pompei's This is a great Italian eatery in Little Italy with cheap entrees and great pizza. You can order plenty of food for under $7 and sit at the candlelit tables either in the restaurant or (weather permitting) on the sidewalk.
Racine Cafe On Racine about a block N. of the expressway, about a 10 min walk from BSB. Cafeteria style service, huge menu--lots of meat, meat, potatoes, veggie, soup specials for those missing Mom's home cooking. There is a bar, TV's, and a pool table.
Zorba's Zorba's sells both traditional Greek and American food in a friendly, fast food style. UIC I-card holders get a 10% discount off dinners.
Asian
Flat Top Grill This is one of Chicago's most popular chains. If you are feeling lethargic and uncreative, you should skip this place. But if you don't mind picking out all of your own ingredients from rice to sauce, this is your restaurant. Oh, one word...all-you-can-eat.
Thai Castle A Greektown restaurant (go figure) with excellent decor. Some of the seats are even under thatched roofing. The portions are generous and cheap...oh, and delicious of course.
Thai Bowl An even cheaper alternative to Thai Castle. This one is in Little Italy and, though it lacks the atmosphere of Thai Castle, it makes up for it in portion size.
Greek
It's hard to say which is better, since they are all really good. All Greektown restaurants are located on Halsted, between Jackson and Madison.
Athena Food's pretty good. The outdoor section is best for a breezy summer day.
Costa's Great food, fancy décor, great ambiance, and a cozy fireplace in the back.
Parthenon Considered one of the best in Greektown.
Pegasus Mediterranean décor, good food.
Rodity's Probably the most authentic of the Greek restaurants. The atmosphere is more family style.
Italian
All restaurants are located on Taylor Street, and prices are a bit higher in comparison to Greektown.
Francesca's Always busy, even on weekdays, Francisca's is one of the most popular restaurants in Chicago.
La Vita A new addition to Little Italy, with modern décor and a large, sophisticated menu. Food, of course, is great.
Mario's Italian Lemonade Stand The line is always long at this Lemonade Stand on Taylor Street. It opens from May to September, and is one of the best places to get Italian Ice in the city.
The Rosebud A popular traditional Italian restaurant, with known for its large portions and home-style cooking.
Pizzas and Burgers
Giordano's In the mood for pizza? You don't need to travel any farther than Greektown for one of the top ten pizza places in Chicago. If you are particularly hungry, order up their Chicago style and you'll wish you never complained about needing food.
Hawkeye's This bar and grill in Little Italy puts a foot forward as UIC's favorite hangout. The food combined with the atmosphere make the prices (generally $5-$15) a steal. Bring in your student discount card for $1.50 off domestic pitchers.
Jacks This is a bar and grill that is tucked around the corner, a few blocks from campus. The appetizers are huge and the menu is the normal bar fare. The bar is well stocked and makes for a great evening/late night hangout. The one drawback is the prices which hover between the $10-$20 range (food and pitchers).
