Cooperative Education and Internship Program

Background Information:

The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (LAS) established the Cooperative Education Program in 1988. In 1994, the name was changed to the Cooperative Education and Internship Program to reflect the variety of opportunities made available to students. Over this period of time, approximately 2800 students have participated in the program. Nearly half of these students have been successfully placed in a co-op/intern position. Subsequently, over 300 LAS students have found professional employment as a direct result of their participation in the program.

Both cooperative education and internships provide students with an opportunity to gain practical hands-on work experience related to their fields of interest or majors before they graduate.

Placements of LAS Co-op/Internship Students:

UIC/LAS students have a variety of employers from which to choose. Available positions include:

Media Relations Intern, Blue Cross/Blue Shield Association
Student Intern, Illinois Department of Professional Regulation
Student Co-op Trainee, US EPA Central Regional Laboratory and MIS Department
Summer Intern, Littlefuse, Inc. - Special Technologies Department
Reporter Intern, Press Publications

These positions and many others are available during the fall and spring semesters as well as the summer session. Time commitments that are expected of the student are either part-time (12-15-20 hrs/wk) or full-time (40 hrs/wk). These positions can be paid, unpaid or for stipend.

Qualifications for the Program:

Students wishing to participate in the program must meet the following requirements:

Completion of at least 45 semester hours (minimally equivalent to second-semester sophomore standing);
An overall UIC GPA of 3.5/5.0 (5.0 = A); and
A declared major within the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences

A student who does not meet the GPA requirement may consult an LAS Co-op/Intern staff person.

Academic Departments and/or Programs:

Academic departments and/or programs that are actively involved in our co-op/internship program efforts include:

Biological Sciences , Chemistry , Communication , Criminal Justice , Economics , English , Geography , Psychology , Political Science , Mathematics, Statistics, and Computer Science , and Sociology .

Students who wish to receive academic credit for their internships are advised to contact their respective departments directly. Assistance is provided by the LAS Co-op/Internship staff.

Students who meet these criteria are encouraged to stop by our office to pick up an application and resume information packet.
