Project Title: Full-Depth Precast Concrete Deck for Rapid Placement of Bridge Deck System

Sponsored by: Illinois Transportation Research Center

Research Objectives:

  • Test proposed full scale bridge (two-span continuous with full-depth precast panels installed on steel stringers) for static, fatigue, and ultimate loading.
  • Full scale laboratory testing of the proposed shear connection to assure the effectiveness of the slab-to-beam connections in fatigue.
  • Perform linear and non-linear finite element analysis.
  • Provide ultimate design and construction recommendations on the full depth precast deck system.

Accomplishments To Date:

  • Full scale laboratory testing of the proposed shear connection.
  • Effect of number of shear studs and different stud configurations.
  • Finite element analysis with respect to the transverse joint tests in an effort to determine the behavior of the joints prior to the actual tests.
  • Feasibility of different materials such as polymer concrete, non-shrink grout, and set-45 for the transverse joint.
  • A detailed description of the experimental methodology including design and fabrication of the panels and assembly of the bridge.

On-going Work:

  • Fabrication of the panels.
  • Finite element analysis to determine the critical locations for instrumentations.
  • Testing of full-scale bridge.
  • Ultimate design and construction recommendations on the full depth precast deck system.
