Project Title: Construction Loads and Vibrations

Sponsored by: Illinois Transportation Research Center

Research Objectives:

  • Investigate the effects of construction loads and vibrations on typical newly poured reinforced concrete bridge decks.
  • Perform experimental analysis to check whether curvature contributed towards the cracking of fresh concrete.
  • Develop a detailed scheme for instrumentation, data collection and analysis, and construction monitoring procedures.
  • Perform dynamic field testing.
  • Provide a recommendation plan for the reduction and control of cracks caused by loads and vibrations encountered during construction.

Accomplishments:

  • Compendium was developed considering all the factors influencing the effects of construction loads and vibration.
  • Finite element analysis to optimize sensor locations for the dynamic field testing.
  • Time history and dynamic analysis were performed.
  • Developed a computer program to identify the best possible pouring sequence for continuos span bridges.
