Communication Department News: Fall 2009
- Congratulations to our colleague Hui-Ching Chang who has recently been offered, and accepted, the position of Associate Dean with the Honors College. Her appointment commences January 1, 2010. This is a 50% appointment, and Hui-Ching Chang will retain some teaching responsibilities with our department and her position as DUS.
- Congratulations to our colleagues Kevin Barnhurst and Hui-Ching Chang, who were recently appointed Honors College Faculty.
- Elaine Yuan spoke on The Duality of Structure in China's Television Market: A Network Analysis of Audience Flow, as invited speaker by the Center for East Asian Studies and the Council on Advanced Studies in Humanities and Social Sciences at the University of Chicago on Dec. 1st.
- Kevin Barnhurst's paper, "The Form of Reports on US Newspaper Internet Sites, An update," has been selected for inclusion in an issue of Journalism Studies on the theme the Future of Journalism, forthcoming in August 2010.
- While serving as Chair Professor at Xiamen University, China, this winter break, Hui-Ching Chang was also invited to give talks at Asia Forum: New Vision, New Direction, Outlining the Blueprint for Chinese Communication Research, sponsored by Shih-Hsin University, Taipei, Taiwan on Dec. 18, 2009.
- Walter Podrazik will appear Friday, November 20 as a panelist on Chicago Tonight Week In Review on WTTW Channel 11 public television in Chicago. Talking about Oprah, Bill Kurtis and Walter Jacobson, and Comcast/NBC. This is a prerecorded program.
- The Wall Street Journal references research by Rajiv Shah, UIC adjunct assistant professor of communication, in an article on the use of video surveillance cameras in Chicago. See it here.
- Department of Communication Sponsors AoIR Closing Reception: The Association of Internet Researchers Annual Conference takes place in Milwaukee, WI this year on October 7-10. The Closing Reception on October 10 from 9:00 P.M. - 2:00 A.M. is sponsored by the University of Illinois, Chicago, Department of Communication. The reception takes places at the Iron Horse Hotel, 500 W Florida St).
- Robert Entman comes to UIC Monday Oct. 12th!: As part of the Department's Skornia Lecture Series, Robert Entman, J.S and M.C. Shapiro Professor of Media and Public Affairs and Professor of International Affairs at The George Washington Univeristy will speak on Media Scandals, Oct. 12 from 12:00 to 1:00P.M. in SCE Rm.713. - Congratulations to PhD 2nd year student Sabrina Pasztor, who recently had two papers accepted to the MPSA Conference on April 22-25, 2009 in Chicago, titled: "Reframing the Chaos: Mass Media Framing of the U.S. Drug War and Policy Reform" and "Reframing the Nation-State: Discussion of the role of Media Framing of the G20 Summit."
- Kevin Barnhurst's recent work on "The Form of Reports on US Newspaper Internet Sites, An update" has been selected for inclusion in the special themed issue of Journalism Studies, devoted to the Future of Journalism to be published in August 2010.
- Congrats to our colleague Jack Jones, whose work "Lincoln eulogizes '...the life of Z.Taylor deceased" has been accepted by the Rhetorical Criticism and Theory Division of CSCA for the April convention.
- Congratulations to Richard Doherty and Jim Danowski on their years of service to the university.
- Congratulations to Andrew Rojecki, who will be collaborating with Rush University on funded research on the framing of obesity, part of the WISHFIT grant - structured around a collaborative agreement mechanism (called CBID--Centers for Behavioral Intervention Development) among seven educational institutions or centers. All 7 centers will be spending the next 5 years developing an intervention to reduce obesity.
- The International Journal of Press/Politics just accepted Sharon Meraz's book review of Chris Patterson and David Domingo, eds., /Making Online News: The Ethnography of New Media Production/ (New York: Peter Lang Publishing Inc., 2008), 236 pp. The review is slated for publication by year's end.
- Hui-Ching Chang has been appointed to a Chair Professorship of Xiamen University Scholars in the College of Communication, Xiamen University, China, from 2009 to 2012. She will help them build programs in communication theory and promote international exchange.
- This year, we will be repeating our series of Graduate Brown Bags, designed to host discussion between faculty and graduate students on topics related to graduate life and academic progress. We have scheduled the following session for the 09/10 academic year. Please mark your calendars and join us for some informal discussion and advice from faculty on the following topics: Sep 16 The Conference Circuit: Research Papers and Presentations; Nov 17 Grants and Funding; Jan 20 How to Get Published; March 10 The Job Search and Interview.
- Congratulations to our colleague Jim Danowski, who has been invited to speak to the Networks and Network Analysis for the Humanities NEH funded workshop, August 15 - 27, 2010, to be hosted at UCLA.
- Congratulations to our colleague Andrew Rojecki, whose work on Media and Religion has been invited to and will be featured in the Oxford Handbook on Religion and the News. Andy will present the work at an invitation-only conference, to be hosted at USC-Annenberg, on the topic of the Handbook in October.
- Ccongratulations to our colleague Debra Burns Melican, whose recently completed dissertation received the U of Michigan Mark Foote Award for best dissertation!
- Steve Jones, UIC professor of communication, is quoted in an Associated Press article about a NFL quarterback who is developing individualized iPhone applications for professional athletes.
