The Communication ComEd Scholarship $2000
The ComEd Scholarship provides excellent support and recognition for deserving Latino students.

Full time major in Communication Sophomore or Junior status

Application Deadlines and Announcements

Awardee writes a thank you letter to ComEd, is recognized as a ComEd Scholar, and is available to meet with ComEd representatives and other ComEd scholars on the UIC campus
The Outstanding Communication Major Award $300
The recipient is chosen by the Head of the Department from undergraduate candidates who have been recommended by the
members of the Awards Committee. Nominations are made by full-time faculty members who have had the student in class.
Students may ask a professor they have had for a class to nominate them for the award.
The award is for a current student who will enroll for at least one more semester at UIC. It cannot be given to a student who has already graduated or will graduate at the end of the fall term.
Here is the nomination form. The deadline for nominations is the third Monday in November. The first recipient was the Fall of 2005.
Communication Department Award of Distinction
This award recognizes the honors students in the major who have achieved academic distinction. Given to students
who are members of the Honors College and have an overall GPA of 3.25 and Comm GPA of 3.5 (out of 4.) The
recipients receive a small token of recognition (usually a gift certificate) and a certificate from the Department
in May each year.
International Communication Association
Student Teaching Award (Graduate Students)
ICA honors this student at the Instructional/ Developmental Division business meeting at the annual
convention this May. ICA also provides this individual with an award certificate, and places his or
her name on our permanent list of outstanding graduate student teachers. The Department provides the
selected student with a one-year membership in ICA and in the Instructional and Developmental Division
as its contribution to the award.
The selected individual should have an outstanding record as a teacher in addition to a solid performance in other aspects of graduate study. The Department nominates ONE graduate student to receive this award. The deadline is usually April 1st.
National Communication Association Award - Membership (Graduate Students)
The NCA Award recognizes an outstanding second year graduate student. The recipient receives a one-year
membership to NCA, plus a one-year subscription to an NCA journal. The Director of Graduate Studies
and any faculty teaching graduate courses in the previous year may make nominations to the Awards Committee.
Students may ask a professor to nominate them.
Deadline for nominations is November 1. The Awards Committee forwards its recommendation to the Department
Head, who awards the student usually at the final department colloquium of the calendar year.
Best Graduate Student Paper Award The Association of Internet Researchers (AoIR) presents an award each year to the top paper on the Internet submitted by a graduate student.

Bernard Shaw Prize

This need-based scholarship is named after the distinguished journalist and CNN anchor and is awarded annually to qualified LAS undergraduates majoring in Communication or English/journalism or History. The purpose of The Bernard Shaw Prize is to recognize superior academic and civic achievement, to encourage further educational study, and to help students needing financial assistance. Recipients must demonstrate, over at least two years as a UIC student, an outstanding record of academic accomplishments, along with exemplary leadership and citizenship.Eligible Disciplines

$10,000Student Leadership Award
Awarded to undergraduate, graduate or professional students with at least a B average (3.0/4.0) who have received their degrees in summer (August 2007) or fall (December 2007), or who are candidates for graduation in spring (May 2008). Nominees should also be associated with diverse leadership roles within one or several student organizations, volunteer services or campus departments where a profound impact was made due to the students leadership efforts. Recipients will be the guests of the Alumni Association at the UIAA Leadership Awards Dinner in their honor on March 13, 2008.
The 2008 Activities Honorary Society recognizes students whose participation in a variety of activities on campus has contributed to a better community for everyone. Eligible nominees must be associated with at least three relatively diverse student organizations with a key role in at least one of the three, and be in good academic standing (2.5/4.0 minimum) with at least 72 credit hours completed by the end of the spring semester. Recipients are selected by past AHS inductees. This member selection, a 58 year history and the loyal support of an active alumni organization make AHS unique among student organizations. Inductees will be honored at a private ceremony sponsored by the UIAA on Sunday, April 13, 2008.

Each year, AAJA offers scholarships to outstanding high school seniors and undergraduate and graduate students.
The Newberry Library Undergraduate Seminar

Chicago Public Radio sponsors this radio journalism and training project. The goal of the series is to engage diverse voices from the Chicago-area community in a discussion over a chosen topic of concern.
Summer Research Opportunity Program (SROP)
Initiated by the Committee on Institutional Cooperation (CIC), it's designed to help increase the number of historically
underrepresented groups or participants of the UIC McNair Program in graduate programs.
