Award Details


The Outstanding Communication Major Award $300

The recipient is chosen by the Head of the Department from undergraduate candidates who have been recommended by the members of the Awards Committee. Nominations are made by full-time faculty members who have had the student in class. Students may ask a professor they have had for a class to nominate them for the award.


The award is for a current student who will enroll for at least one more semester at UIC. It cannot be given to a student who has already graduated or will graduate at the end of the fall term.


The deadline for submission of the nomination form is the third Monday in November. The first recipient was the Fall of 2005.



Communication Department Award of Distinction

This award recognizes the honors students in the major who have achieved academic distinction. Given to students who are members of the Honors College and have an overall GPA of 3.25 and Communication GPA of 3.5 (out of 4.) The recipients receive a small token of recognition (usually a gift certificate) and a certificate from the Department in May each year.



International Communication Association Student Teaching Award (Graduate Students)

ICA honors this student at the Instructional/ Developmental Division business meeting at the annual convention this May. ICA also provides this individual with an award certificate, and places his or her name on our permanent list of outstanding graduate student teachers. The Department provides the selected student with a one-year membership in ICA and in the Instructional and Developmental Division as its contribution to the award.


The selected individual should have an outstanding record as a teacher in addition to a solid performance in other aspects of graduate study. The Department nominates ONE graduate student to receive this award. The deadline is usually April 1st.



National Communication Association Award - Membership (Graduate Students)

The NCA Award recognizes an outstanding second year graduate student. The recipient receives a one-year membership to NCA, plus a one-year subscription to an NCA journal. The Director of Graduate Studies and any faculty teaching graduate courses in the previous year may make nominations to the Awards Committee. Students may ask a professor to nominate them. Deadline for nominations is November 1. The Awards Committee forwards its recommendation to the Department Head, who awards the student usually at the final department colloquium of the calendar year.


Best Graduate Student Paper Award

The Association of Internet Researchers (AoIR) presents an award each year to the top paper on the Internet submitted by a graduate student.

Supporting Excellence Endowment (SEE) Scholarships

The scholarships are available to UIC undergraduates who meet the criteria including the demonstration of co-curricular campus-level leadership and academic excellence. Up to two $2500 scholarships will be awarded for the 2009-2010 year. The detailed criteria and application/nomination forms are available at the OVCSA website.

 

The application deadline is March 13, 2009.

Bernard Shaw Prize

Application Deadline: 4 p.m., Friday, March 31, 2009

This need-based scholarship is named after the distinguished journalist and CNN anchor and is awarded annually to qualified LAS undergraduates majoring in Communication or English/journalism or History. The purpose of The Bernard Shaw Prize is to recognize superior academic and civic achievement, to encourage further educational study, and to help students needing financial assistance. Recipients must demonstrate, over at least two years as a UIC student, an outstanding record of academic accomplishments, along with exemplary leadership and citizenship.

Special Eligibility Requirements

Preference to minorities. A graded writing sample from one of your UIC classes is required. Statement of personal and professional goals is required.

Student Leadership Award

Eligible nominees are associated with a leadership role within one or several UIC student organizations, volunteer services or campus departments where a profound impact was made due to the student's leadership efforts. (Paid positions are eligible.) Nominees must also be in good academic standing (3.0-4.0 GPA) and receive their undergraduate, graduate or professional degree in the spring (May 2011), summer (August 2011) or fall (December 2011). Self-nominations are also accepted.. Recipients are selected by past AHS inductees. Inductees will be honored at a private ceremony sponsored by the UIAA.
