Kevin G. Barnhurst, Professor
Political communication, narrative studies of news consumption, critical analysis of journalism, visual media culture, and qualitative methods. Books include Media Queered: Visibility and its Discontents (New York: Lang), an edited collection; The Form of News, A History (New York: The Guilford Press), with John Nerone, the ICA Outstanding Book (2003), MEA Suzanne Langer Award (2002), and AEJMC Covert Award (2001) for media history; and Seeing the Newspaper (New York: St. Martin's Press), Mellett citation for media criticism, In These Times magazine best book of the year. More than 100 scholarly publications include several articles in the Journal of Communication, Media, Culture & Society, and Critical Studies in Mass Communication, as well as two Journalism & Communication Monographs, book chapters, and shorter pieces, in English, Italian, and Spanish. Lectures frequently at universities in Latin America and Europe. Awards include Gæsteprofessor, University of Copenhagen, Denmark (2009); LSU Reilly Visiting Fellow (2008); Distinguished Fulbright Chair, Italy (2006); Shorenstein Fellow (2001) at Harvard University; Faculty Scholar (1999-2000) of the UIC Great Cities Institute; Research Fellow and Visiting Scholar (1991-1992) at Columbia University in New York City; and Senior Fulbright Scholar, Peru (1989).
