The Commuter Assistants Program at UIC

The Commuter Assistants Program at UIC allows incoming students who live off campus to be grouped in peer groups with an upperclass leader. This leader will be available for you each week, formally and informally to aid in your transition to UIC.  Each Commuter Assistant will plan events and programs to allow you to bond as a group and with your specific Commuter Assistant.

What will you get from the Commuter Assistant program as a participant?-Friendships!-Insight into resources on campus.
-Information about how to express your interests on campus by joining interest groups and clubs.
-Opportunities to socialize with other first-year commuters who, like you, have taken interest in getting the most out of their UIC experience.
-Depending on what off-campus experiences your group does, you could learn about a Chicagoland neighborhood, a new museum exhibit.

Frequently Asked Questions:
What would enrolling in the Commuter Assistant Program mean to me?
If you enroll in this program, you will be assigned a specific CA. That person will plan special events throughout the semester just for you and other participants assigned in your CA’s group. If you complete enough requirements (see section to the right for full details), you get to participate in the end of semester recognition event.

What would be in it for me? The Commuter Assistant Program offers you an opportunity to connect with other new students and upperclass students that will help you make the most of your time at UIC. Don’t forget, you will learn stuff, have fun,and meet friends along the way!

Does it cost money? The program doesn’t cost money. Your CA might organize an optionaloff-campus event that may have an associated cost or deposit.

What is a Commuter Assistant anyway?A Commuter Assistant (CA) is an upperclass UIC student who has demonstrated leadership, involvement, and commitment tothe campus that make them an excellent role-model and resource for incoming students. Most of the CA are currently commuters themselves,so they understand the special challenges and opportunities involved.

Program requirements if you enroll:
-Attend 3 programs produced by your Commuter Assistant during the semester (They will plan at least 5, so you should have lots of options).
-Check-in with your Commuter Assistant at least once per month during the semester. If you complete these requirements you will be recognized at a ceremony in December!
