Registering for New York University Foreign Language Proficiency Exams |
First
Step
.
The first step in registering for an NYU
Foreign Language Proficiency exam is to consult with an Academic Advisor
at the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (LAS) to determine whether
or not you are eligible for the exam. These exams are intended for
foreign-born LAS students for whom English is a non-native language.
However, not all foreign-born, nor all multi-lingual students may be deemed
eligible. The decision on eligibility is made by LAS staff according
to LAS guidelines. To make an appointment for advising in connection
with this program, call (312) 996-3366.
Eligible students will be given a letter of authorization, which must be submitted to the Office of Testing Services (OTS) in order to register for the exam, along with information on how to order test materials.
Forms and fees are to be mailed directly to NYU by the student; the address, and further details are available from LAS.
Students ordering test materials are advised to call NYU directly at (212) 998-7030 to check on current fees and for details on particular exams before sending registration form and fees. (The fees charged by NYU change periodically, and if insufficient fees are submitted, this will result in a delay in receiving test materials.) Test materials will be shipped from NYU to UIC's Office of Testing Services in approximately 3 to 6 weeks.
Registering at OTS
.
After meeting with an LAS Advisor, students
must register for the exam in person at the Office of Testing Services
(OTS) in the Student Services Building. When registering, students
must submit a signed letter of authorization from LAS, and give information
on how they can be contacted when test materials arrive (e.g. phone, e-mail,
US mail).
Making a Testing Appointment
.
Once test materials arrive at OTS, the
student will be contacted, and may then make an appointment for testing.
Testing appointments are generally available weekdays, during normal business
hours. However, due to scheduling constraints, there are several
days each month when individual appointments cannot be accommodated, so
students needing to obtain exam results by a deadline are encouraged to
make the necessary arrangements at the earliest possible date to assure
maximum scheduling flexibility.
Taking the Test
.
NYU Language Proficiency exams run two
hours in length, and consist of four sections. For most exams, the
first section assesses listening compreshension; the student listens to
a tape-recorded passage in the test language, and answers several questions
about the passage. Sections two and three are translations: from
the test language into English, and from English into the test language.
In the fourth section, the student writes a short essay in the test language
on a selected topic.
The exams are administered at the Office of Testing Services, Room 1070 Student Services Building (SSB). Students must present a valid UIC "I Card" at the time of testing, and no books, notes, scratch paper, or other aids are permitted in the testing room.
Exam Results
.
Exams are graded by NYU Foreign Languages
Department faculty, and scores are reported by NYU to the student and to
LAS in approximately four weeks.
| OTS is located in the Student Services Building (SSB) on the East Campus of UIC. A short distance south and west of Chicago's Loop, on the northwest corner of Racine and Harrison streets (1200 West, 600 South), OTS is readily accessible by public transportation as well as by car. The CTA's Blue Line stops one half-block north of SSB on Racine street, and each of Chicago's major expressways passes within a few blocks of the UIC campus. SSB is located across the street from the UIC Pavilion, and is within short walking distance of abundant public parking. For a map of UIC's East Campus, and directions to OTS, click here. |
