Foreign Language Proficiency Exams

New York University (NYU) offers proficiency examinations in over 50 languages for use at colleges and universities nationwide.  These exams measure students' abilities in three skill areas necessary for everyday communication:  listening, reading, and writing.  Students are required to answer questions on a listening comprehension passage, translate a passage from English to the test language as well as one from the test language into English, and to write a short essay in the test language on a selected topic.  For of list of language exams offered by the NYU Foreign Language Department, click here.

Exams are scored by the NYU Foreign Language Department Faculty, and scores reported to the student and to his or her college or university.

Some students in UIC's College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (LAS) may be eligible to take an NYU Proficiency exam in lieu of foreign language coursework.  Foreign-born LAS students wishing to explore this option should begin by contacting an Academic Advisor to determine eligibility.  The telephone number for the LAS Office of Student Affairs, Advising and Information is (312) 996-3366.

Eligible students will be given a letter of authorization, which must be submitted to the Office of Testing Services (OTS) in order to register for the exam, along with information on how to order test materials.  For a more detailed description of how to go about registering for an NYU Foreign Language Proficiency exam, click here.

OTS is located in the Student Services Building (SSB) on the East Campus of UIC.  A short distance south and west of Chicago's Loop, on the northwest corner of Racine and Harrison streets (1200 West, 600 South), OTS is readily accessible by public transportation as well as by car.  The CTA's Blue Line stops one half-block north of SSB on Racine street, and each of Chicago's major expressways passes within a few blocks of the UIC campus.  SSB is located across the street from the UIC Pavilion, and is within short walking distance of abundant public parking.  For a map of UIC's East Campus, and directions to OTS, click here.
