CRWG WISEST Initiative Receives NSF ADVANCE Grant!
The Women in Science and Engineering System Transformation (WISEST) Initiative was selected for a National Science Foundation ADVANCE award. The $3.3 million in funding will allow WISEST to accelerate its activities to increase the number, participation, and leadership status of women faculty in the eleven science and engineering (STEM) departments at UIC. WISEST uses a network of faculty facilitators from all STEM departments along with department heads and an executive committee of key administrators and social scientists to carry out five integrated and mutually reinforcing strategies: warm the climate and decrease the isolation of women STEM faculty; recruit minority women faculty through a unique mentored postdoctoral program; transform STEM departments to foster diversity and women's leadership; promote women's scholarship and teaching; and improve the ability to track and report on gender equity at UIC.
UIC CoE Named "Ambassador for Change"
The UIC National Center of Excellence in Women's Health (CoE) is beginning its ninth year with a new designation - “Ambassador for Change” from the Department of Health and Human Services, Office on Women’s Health. This designation has been given to senior CoEs that have demonstrated success in establishing a multidisciplinary model for women's health. As an Ambassador for Change, the CoE is responsibile for providing advice and guidance to other organizations interested in developing or implementing the CoE’s unique, multidisciplinary models. The UIC CoE will continue its model of promoting comprehensive health care across the lifespan, within clinical, research, educational, and community settings, and with a focus on underserved and diverse women. We will also provide technical assistance to other CoEs and interested organizations and institutions around multiple issues including leadership and mentoring for junior faculty and community partnerships.
