Hospital selection for the Illinois CAPTURE Stroke Registry began in 2004. Twenty-two acute care hospitals were selected using a stratified random sample. Each of the seven Illinois Department of Public Health regions in Illinois (Champaign Chicago, Edwardsville, Marion, Peoria, Rockford, and West Chicago) are represented in Year 1 of the Registry.

In the second year of the project, eighteen additional hospitals that represent all seven regions were selected for participation. In the third year, additional hospitals were selected so that all areas of the state are represented.

The Registry staff and personnel at participating hospitals work together to improve the quality of care that Stroke and TIA patients receive.
