Importance

Stroke is a leading cause of serious, long-term disability in the United States. It ranks No. 3 among all causes of death. Each year about 700,000 people experience a new or recurrent stroke. The estimated cost of stroke in the U.S. in 2004 is $53.6 billion. Can we reduce these numbers? We think so.

With advances in diagnosis and treatment, stroke can now be managed as the life threatening emergency that it is.

Quality Improvement is an important way to ensure that the best stroke care is provided at the right time. This involves two steps: measuring performance and reporting it. Quality Improvement helps us do this.

The Medicare Quality Improvement Community (MedQIC, pronounced med-quick) is a national knowledge forum for healthcare and quality improvement professionals. It provides easy access to quality improvement resources. Think of it as a community of professionals sharing knowledge and experiences to accelerate healthcare quality improvement across the nation.

MedQIC is sponsored by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS). It exists to support and promote the Medicare Quality Improvement Program and the Quality Improvement Organizations (QIOs). One of its goals is to help Medicare providers deliver the right care to every Medicare beneficiary, every time.
